The project
Tesselles brings together the know-how of mosaicist Françoise Lombaers and the digital practice of Guillaume Slizewicz. The duo works with Winckelmans stoneware tiles, 2 × 2 cm, assembled in sheets and laid according to patterns generated by code.
Algorithms inspired by mycelial growth, cellular automata, wave propagation and minimum-spanning trees define how colour and density move across the grid. Each motif starts as a field of values and becomes a surface built tessella by tessella.
The first series — Game of Life, Mycelium, Ondes and Prim — explores how strict square modules can still carry movement, rhythm and a quiet sense of landscape.
Process & context
Developed within the Duos en Résonances programme by Wallonie Design, Tesselles sits between collectible design, architectural surface and digital art. Patterns are prototyped in simple tools like spreadsheets before being transferred to laying plans and fixed into mortar.
The work has been presented in design and art contexts alongside contemporary craft and experimental furniture, where it resonates with both historic floors and current explorations of algorithmic form.
